WHAT IS OPERATION HOMETOWN LINK? The Iowa Communications Network, in collaboration with the Iowa National Guard, has joined the Operation Hometown Link initiative of the national non-profit Freedom Calls Foundation. Using state-of-the art technology, ICN and Freedom Calls connect Iowa families with active-duty personnel serving in Iraq at Al Asad, Fallujah, and Taji. The video reunions are provided at no cost to the family or soldier. Video reunions may take place at many of the 700+ ICN classrooms located around the state, through the week and on Saturdays. ICN staff members find an appropriate location for the family, while Freedom Calls schedules the soldier’s satellite time. Families catch up on events in their lives, and even celebrate birthday parties, surprise engagements, anniversaries, graduations and other memorable moments, during these video reunions. Soldiers are allowed a one-hour initial visit, depending on approval from superiors, and a maximum of one ½ hour session per month after that. HOW IT WORKS It only takes a simple phone call to start setting up a video reunion! The family and soldier provide the ICN with basic information, and the rest is taken care of by ICN and Freedom Calls. Once the information is received, ICN staff and Freedom Calls volunteers work to schedule the call. The ICN arranges a classroom for family to use close to home. After dates and times are confirmed, families go to the ICN classroom and have a video reunion with their soldier.
